Original Song #12

Buried

How many times can you stand to fall over
How many drinks will kill this sober

Spending all your time

Losing video games

How many days must you sit by that window
Watching your dreams get covered up in snow
At least the seasons
Have the courtesy to change

You could’ve been something
You could still be something now
Only thing you haven’t beaten
Is that crippling self-doubt

You’ve got to help yourself out

How many days do you read your newspaper
Watch the TV for Dini and Oprah
Media placebos for your agoraphobia

How many times can you stand to fall over
How little changes as you grow older
Maybe do some chores
Check up on the sports scores

You’ve got friends you know
Maybe even give you a hand
Watching from the sidelines
This gem buried in quicksand

I do and don’t understand

Don't know why, but this song reminds me (and am I ever dating myself!)of l961, Ann-Margret, frequent Elvis co-star in those old movies, singing, "I just don't understand." There was an especially strong barritone sax coda in the song, which I found kinda groovy. (Anybody say groovy any more?).
Oh what the hell, we're musicians.
The song never dies, just the singer.

Hey, Scott could you give me the key you had in mind, and possibly a chord pattern, i kinda like this one...

Thanks all.

Dazz, it's in what I call "cheat-G" (so many of my older songs are) and sorta has the feel of that Replacements song, Here Comes a Regular. I don't have it tabbed, but it needs to be in order to communicate it properly. Even then, there's a particular strumming pattern, but here's the jist of it.

It's in 3/4 time and I play the theme with the middle finger on the deep G, the A-string muted, the ring finger on the D note of the B-string, and the high E-string open. Next change, pinky goes down on the G of that high E-string. Next lift the pinky for the same pseudo chord as we started with, then lift the ring finger as well for the last one. That brings you to the end of the first line. Repeat for the second line. Next, a "cheat-C" chord, which just means I slip my middle finger down to the C on the A-string, and mute the D-string. Again, ring finger on D, pinky up in the air to let that high E ring. Then - keeping the middle finger on the C, pinky goes back down on the third fret for a G on that high E-string; rinse and repeat, only without moving the ring finger off that D note.

When you get to the line: "You could have been something", that stuff's built around a D chord, using a variety of suspended 2nds, D majors, and suspended 4ths. I hope that's not too confusing. I really should get off my ass and record it sometime.

When I have the moolah (likely never...)

lol....I hear ya, the kid next door to me has a studio in his basement and is always bugging me to come over, guess I should get off my butt and go one of these days.

Thanks, I'll fool around with it, I'm a finger picker, so it makes sense....kinda....lol
